Follow the Christ

Follow the Christ

I got a knock on my door yesterday. Fortunately, I had just woken up and was in my underwear so I didn’t answer it. It turned out to be some Jehovah’s Witness’. They left a flyer on my door which I scanned and posted above.

There are a number of things that bother me about this flyer. Like, why is it ‘Follow the Christ?’ His name was Jesus Christ. If I was going to tell someone to say call Jesus Christ I might say ‘Call Jesus…’ or ‘Call Christ and tell him to hurry we got a ton of water here and no wine..’ but not ‘Call the Christ.’ So why should calling be any different than following? I could see ‘Follow Christ’,'Follow Jesus’ or, if they absolutely had to have the the,’Follow the Lord’ or something like that. This utter disregard for the English language already has me skeptical about this religion.

But what really gets me is the drawing of Jesus. Please! That ain’t Jesus! Jesus has long hair. I know I’ve seen lots of other pictures of him.

“…Champion of liberty.”

George W. Bush gave a speech this July 4th at the West Virginia state capitol. During his speech he made this quote

We still believe, on America’s 228th birthday, that freedom has the power to change the world. We are proud of our founders, but I know that the founders would be proud of America today. They would see a nation that is the world’s foremost champion of liberty.

Interestingly enough a husband and wife were arrested at this event for wearing anti-Bush t-shirts.

As Bush spoke of universal freedoms, those who had opinions that differed from the Republican line were removed. Nicole and Jeffery Rank of Corpus Christi, Texas, were taken out in restraints by police. They were issued citations for trespassing and released, said Jay Smithers, acting director of the Capitol police force.

“We were told we couldn’t be here because we were wearing these shirts that said we were against Bush,” Nicole Rank shouted as police rushed her out.

Smithers said the pair had tickets to the event and wore clothing over their anti-Bush T-shirts. Once through the security checkpoint, they removed their outer layers and mingled in the crowd.

“We asked them to go out to the designated protest area but they refused,” Smithers said. “They told our people they would not leave and sat down on their hands. We didn’t have any choice.”
